8 Picture Books You Don't Have To Be A Kid To Love

NPR - Here at NPR Books, we may be grown-ups, but every now and then we still enjoy channeling our inner 7-year-olds. And this week, we have the perfect excuse: Monday's Randolph Caldecott Medal announcement for picture book artistry. We've tried (and failed) to predict winners in the past, but right or wrong, we still like looking at pretty picture books and wildly speculating about what could win.

How Student Centered Is Your Classroom?

Edutopia - In the education world, the term student-centered classroom is one we hear a lot. And many educators would agree that when it comes to 21st-century learning, having a student-centered classroom is certainly a best practice.

What the Heck Is Project-Based Learning?

Edutopia - You know the hardest thing about teaching with project-based learning? Explaining it to someone. It seems to me that whenever I asked someone the definition of PBL, the description was always so complicated that my eyes would begin to glaze over immediately. So to help you in your own musings, I've devised an elevator speech to help you clearly see what's it all about.

How Does the Brain Learn Best? Smart Studying Strategies | MindShift

If you sit down to study a load of material, "of course you're not going to remember most of it the next day," Carey said. You do have to go back and build your knowledge. "But it's not that you don't remember well, or you're not a good learner. It's that forgetting is a critical part of learning."

How to use brain science to engage students after the holidays

educationviews.org - Neurologist and former teacher Judy Willis explains how techniques such as walking backwards and changing the furniture in your classroom can motivate students on the first day back of term

As the holidays come to an end, thoughts of students and lesson plans replace time spent indulging in puddings and turkey. But teachers know all too well that it's challenging enough to motivate a class on a Monday morning after a weekend, nevermind after a longer break. To reignite energy levels this January here are my tips as a neurologist and former teacher:

His examples remind me that my students will be dealing with data in news ways now, and their ability to process that data is dependent upon having people who can create that imagery. They can start thinking like those people.
